The Center for Global Development estimates that 57% of the funding for TB programs was terminated by the administration. Because nearly all TB projects have been terminated in USAID’s 24 priority countries prevention, diagnosis and treatment services have been cut for millions of people.

The New York Times estimates that the termination of USAID programs could result in 310,000 people dying from losing tuberculosis treatment—the same as if the entire population of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Tuberculosis (TB) programs are essential in detecting, treating, and preventing a disease that still kills over a million people each year, despite being curable. According to Dr. Lucica Ditiu of the Stop TB Partnership, these interruptions in treatment could lead to the emergence of new, untreatable forms of TB, threatening to reverse significant progress made in 2024, which had been "the best year on record" for TB diagnosis and treatment.

In Uganda, USAID funding supported critical mosquito-spraying operations that were meant to begin in February before the rainy season, but these have been suspended due to terminated contracts. Without this preventive measure, health officials warn of a rise in severe malaria cases later this year, potentially overwhelming a healthcare system where malaria already accounts for 30-50% of all outpatient visits.

Nigeria, which records a quarter of the world's malaria cases, has reduced malaria-related deaths by 55% since 2000, largely through U.S. support. With USAID terminating 90% of its foreign aid contracts, local healthcare providers like Dr. Yetunde Ayo-Oyalowo warn that many impoverished patients who make up to 40% of their clientele will be unable to afford malaria treatment on their own

Investing in malaria prevention and treatment saves lives by providing essential tools like insecticide-treated nets, medications, and rapid diagnostics to the most affected regions. Without sustained funding, malaria cases and deaths will rise, reversing hard-won progress and endangering global health security.

In Myanmar, the dismantling of USAID has led to the termination of anti-malaria programs, which will cause cases to rise even further than the 300% increase since the onset of civil war in 2021. This rollback threatens to reverse progress in malaria elimination across Southeast Asia's Mekong sub-region. New cases are also emerging in parts of Thailand that had not seen malaria for years as refugees and migrants from Myanmar cross the border.
